In May 2019 the ISCC was accepted by ISO/TC 46/SC 9 as a Provisional Work Item to develop an international standard. After the acceptance by ISO, the founders of the Content Blockchain Project – Sebastian Posth, Kira Lemke, and Titusz Pan – established the ISCC Foundation as an independent nonprofit organization in the Netherlands to advance the development and adoption of the ISCC.
Industry Outreach
Throughout 2019 the ISCC Foundation focused on promoting adoption and advancing the specifications and reference implementations. Representatives presented the ISCC at major industry events including the Frankfurt Rights Meeting, the Publishing Fair in Turin, and the IFFRO World Congress.
Technical Development
The development team created a command-line toolkit supporting text, image, audio, and video identifiers. Video support was built on the MPEG-7 ISO/IEC 15938 standard. Development follows the principle that implementation and testing come before specification.
2019 Statistics:
- 12,340 downloads of ISCC specifications
- 13,852 downloads of the CLI tool
- 568,580 registered ISCC codes on the testnet
Next Steps
Planned developments include Short-ID implementation, code indexing, blockchain registration, and specifications for audio and video content codes. Future work will also focus on W3C DID system compliance.
